Education Packs
Get WASTED with us and become a plastic expert. How? With our Education Package. This three-part lesson plan will teach you about Plastic Addiction, Plastic Archeology, and show you first-hand and hands-on how to reprocess locally recycled plastic waste. With the Education Package, you not only become a plastic expert, but are also part of creating something with the community, for the community, while cleaning up the environment – win, win, win!
Where is it? Anywhere! Our Laboratory is now mobile, offering both the first two informational lessons and the hands-on workshop at a school, company or other location upon request.
How the Education Package began
Initially, the WASTED Education Package focused on reaching local students (future change-makers) in Amsterdam Noord. Now, the aim remains to better educate individuals on the role plastic plays in everyday life. In this way, participants learn how by becoming a plastic expert they can turn knowledge into practical power, doing good in their local community, for their community and greater social, material, economic and environmental world.
In the summer of 2015, the following schools have brought the WASTED Education Package to their students: Clusius College, Hyperion and Rosa Occupation College – all located in Amsterdam Noord.
Education Package break down
Through two interactive lessons and a workshop, we ask you to examine your relationship with plastic, shedding light on both potential problems and innovative solutions regarding plastic and the environment. In the end, you come out a ‘plastic expert,’ empowered to actively turn trash into community treasure.
PART 1: Plastic Addiction
First, we shake up and distress you (just a bit), arousing awareness of your relationship with central issues and imminent problems surrounding plastic. Then, we roll out an interactive four-part lecture focusing on:
1. How the world is affected by plastic
2. How plastic was intended to save the world
3. How plastic still could (if we approach it correctly)
4. A WASTED project teaser
PART 2: Plastic Archaeology
Plastic Archaeology teaches you to recognize different types of plastic through several experiments. During this lesson, you become a real plastic expert, understanding why some plastics are better than others, and the potential of each plastic type. For this, we ask you to separate and bring in your own plastic for Part 2.
PART 3: WASTED Laboratory Workshop
Checking out the facilities and meeting the Laboratory team, during the Workshop you’ll close the local loop of plastic recycling by creating your own WASTED Blocks. Your Blocks will be used to build something for the community, or a structure of your choice.
FYI: we developed the Education Package based on methods proven in Kemptonand Holland’s 2014 study of secondary school students and environmental issues “Uncovering Students’ Environmental Identity”.
